The oldest Lake Tahoe ski resort is making some changes to its historic lodging area.

Sugar Bowl ski resort recently announced it was breaking ground on its biggest capital improvement campaign in the resort’s 86-year history. The resort says the goal is to elevate the guest experience and ensure that Sugar Bowl keeps the spirit alive for future generations of residents, visitors and employees.
The renovation will replace the original 1939 Village Lodge wood deck with a two-tiered terrace. In addition, the resort will double the size of the Village Lodge kitchen, increase dining room space for guests to enjoy it, and reimagine its food and beverage offering with a focus on sustainable, seasonal and hyper-local food and beverages.
Sugar Bowl also says it will construct a “best-in-class locker room” – an all-new space in the Village Lodge with built-in boot dryers and plenty of storage space for the gear of skiers and riders. The Main Lodge will feature an experiential space for staff, serving as a home away from home for its workforce.

Sugar Bowl will launch more improvements in 2026, including the replacement of our historic gondola with a state-of-the-art, 8-person system and rehabilitation of the gondola garage. It will also revamp the Main Lodge base area to elevate the arrival experience and access to beginner terrain along with other enhancements.
“We’re excited for our next chapter, yet vigilant about preserving the secluded charm that distinguishes Sugar Bowl and our snowbound village, where the soul of the mountain comes alive,” the Sugar Bowl press release stated.
Located off Interstate 80 at the Norden exit on Donner Summit, Sugar Bowl is rich in history, has high snow totals, and is the closest Tahoe ski resort to Sacramento. It is home to the state’s first chairlift. The base is 6,883 feet and its summit rises to 8,383 feet. It has 11 lifts and more than 100 trails.
