Mt. Rose, Homewood ski resorts offering $49 lift tickets for MLK weekend

January 17, 2014 By Jeffrey Weidel

Two Lake Tahoe ski resorts are offering discounted lift tickets in celebration of the San Francisco 49ers playing in the NFC Championship game on Sunday in Seattle.

Both Homewood Mountain Resort and Mount Rose ski resort are offering $49 lift tickets.Homewood rider getting air

Skiers and snowboarders simply need to say “Go Niners!” at any Homewood ticket window to receive the discounted price, a savings of $30 off the regular Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend adult rates. The deal is good Friday through Sunday.

Homewood, located off Highway 89 in Tahoe’s north shore, says its conditions are looking good for the long weekend: Saturday’s snow storm dropped 3 inches of fresh snow on the upper mountain, while cold temperatures have allowed snowmakers to refresh Homewood’s lower runs with additional coverage, and the terrain park crew has been keeping the eight features in the Happy Park in perfect shape for all ability levels of park riders.

With top-to-bottom terrain open and sunny weather in the forecast, Homewood will be a great place to work up an appetite for some football this weekend. And with eight flat-screen TVs around the resort scheduled to broadcast both games on Sunday, skiers and snowboarders don’t need to worry about missing any of the action if they want to make some turns before cheering for their favorite team.

“I just took a couple of runs on the north-facing slopes off the Old Homewood Express and was really excited by how good the skiing is up there,” said Kevin Mitchell, Homewood’s general manager. “There were still fresh tracks to be found in the trees, and the coverage on what is open is looking good. It should be a great long weekend for those who make it up to Tahoe.”Homewood powder tree skier

Adults, teens and seniors can all take advantage of the reduced $49 lift ticket pricing from now through Sunday, Jan. 19, while kids ages 5-12 and seniors ages 70+ will get $24 or $29 lift tickets at the resort as scheduled.

Mount Rose ski resort

The popular ski resort off Mt. Rose Highway will offer $49 lift tickets both Saturday and Sunday.

Mt. Rose says its high altitude and northern exposure give some of the best conditions in Tahoe. Mt.Rose just opened the Lower Lakeview trail, adding more advanced terrain to the  mountain.

Below are comments from Mt Rose longtime Grooming/Snowmaking Manager Dave Hahl.

Mt. Rose: How are the conditions right now?

Answer: They are very good in actuality. We have an adequate base and with nightly grooming the surface conditions are quite enjoyable.Mt. Rose scenic shot

Mt. Rose:  What are you currently working on?
Answer: We just opened Lower Lakeview and are working on upper/middle Silver Dollar with three guns dedicated to spot repair.

Mt. Rose: How’s the mountain holding up?
Answer: Really well, snowmaking snow always does. A snowmaking particle is round, so it bonds tighter together than a natural snowflake does. A natural snowflake has more air in it, so it tends to wear out faster than a snowmaking snowflake.

Mt. Rose: How are you and your crew holding up?
Answer: Our job never ends; it’s literally 24/7 but the crew is holding up well. It’s a lot of work opening up multiple runs on man-made snow, but we’re up to the task.
