It’s an event that many ski resorts put in the category of the “silly season.” And a primary silly event for this time of year at Palisades Tahoe is the annual Cushing Crossing.

Haven’t witnessed a Cushing Crossing? You should. It’s FUN! Many Tahoe ski resorts now offer a pond-skimming event. But Palisades Tahoe started the trend, back in the days when it was known as Squaw Valley ski resort.
And since every other Tahoe ski resort is now closed for the season, Palisades Tahoe is the only resort still running its lifts. Closing day is scheduled for Memorial Day, May 10. Although the snow is marginal at this point, the resort has received 387 inches of snow at its summit for the 2024-25 season.
The 33rd Annual Cushing Crossing is a comical pond-skimming contest that is widely regarded as the best event of the spring ski season. Participants must 18 or older and be present to register (no one can register on behalf of any competitor).
The number of participants is limited – registration is first-come, first-served. Registration starts at 8 am Saturday at the KT Deck. The registration fee is $20, payable in cash only. The awards ceremony will immediately follow the event at Cushing Pond. Category winners will receive prizes from event sponsors, including Yeti, Smith, GoPro, and Darn Tough!

The location of the Cushing Pond is near the base of KT-22 lift. This iconic spring tradition features wild costumes, big spills, and one of the only pond skims in the country held on a naturally formed pond. It’s recommended that spectators bring a chair, sun protection, and water.
Participants attempt to ski or snowboard across chilly waters of the Cushing Pond in their craziest costumes. Often, the spills are spectacular and comical in nature.
Admission to view the event is free, and everyone is encouraged to dress up in their wackiest costumes. The Cushing Crossing starts at 1 pm, weather and conditions permitting.
Palisades Tahoe will also be holding a raffle during the event to support the Palisades Avalanche Dog Program. Guests will have the chance to win a variety of prizes, with all proceeds going toward the care, training, and equipment for the resort’s hardworking avalanche rescue dogs.
