Numerous summer activities at Lake Tahoe’s West Shore

June 25, 2016 By Jeffrey Weidel

Looking for something to do when vacationing in Lake Tahoe this summer? Lake Tahoe’s West Shore has numerous activities and signature events throughout the summer months.

Homewood Mountain Sports, located inside the North Lodge at Homewood Mountain Resort, offers daily rental of stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, cruiser bikes and mountain bikes, and the mountain is open for hiking and cross-country mountain biking on Homewood’s summer trail network.

Lake Tahoe’s West Shore offers the ultimate summer respite. Returning signature events include Homewood Mountain Resort’s annual Cornhole League, West Shore Café’s Paddleboard Yoga Series, weekly Painted Vine art classes, and a variety of other activities scheduled throughout the season.

“The summer season offers an incredible opportunity for locals and visitors to relax and enjoy all that the mountains and the lake have to offer,” said Kevin Mitchell, general manager of Homewood Mountain Resort. “We look forward to welcoming guests to the West Shore, and to offering them a fun, memorable experience whether they prefer to be active, or sit back and take it all in.”

Starting June 27, Homewood Mountain Resort will host the return of its annual summer Cornhole League. On Monday nights from 5-9 p.m. until August 22 (with a bye on July 4), teams will play three games per night while enjoying live music, drink specials, raffles and some of the best competition around the lake. Teams will consist of two players and two alternates, with a one-time entry fee of $40 per team required. The season will end with a $400 grand prize awarded to the winning team, and $200 to the runner-up. To register, visit Eventbrite.

Hands-on painting sessions with The Painted Vine, a local business based in Truckee, Calif., will offer a special evening of painting and dinner at West Shore Café on Wednesdays in July and August (except Aug. 17).

Designed to offer a place to paint and connect with others, the concept is to provide participants with a guided lesson that helps novice artists work toward creating a “masterpiece” they can be proud of. Painting sessions will take place at West Shore Café from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost to participate is $40 per person and includes painting instruction and supplies. Advance reservations are required, and can be made online through The Painted Vine’s event calendar.

Yoga practitioners are invited to enjoy the peace an early morning on the lake can bring while practicing yoga on the water. A true test of balance and inner strength, Paddleboard Yoga classes are a fun, yet challenging way to practice yoga and experience the people that make Tahoe’s yoga community special. West Shore Café will offer Saturday morning SUP Yoga classes from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. from July 2 through Sept. 3 (no class on Aug. 6). The cost to participate is $25 per class. Pre-registration is recommended for those who would like a paddleboard to be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own paddleboard, and previous yoga and paddleboard experience is recommended. Classes are offered weather and conditions permitting.

West Shore Café also offers access to complimentary lawn games including large dice, jenga, cornhole, dominoes and bocce ball daily from 11 a.m. to dusk.

Those interested in a casual bite following activity on the lake or the mountain are invited to stop in to 89 Bar & Grill, a new restaurant located in Homewood Mountain Resort’s North Lodge along West Lake Blvd. (Hwy 89).

Open Thursday through Monday from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. featuring walk-up counter food service and a full bar serving craft beers and classic cocktails, 89 Bar & Grill’s menu features signature burgers, wings, wraps, ribeye steak tacos and more.

For those who want a lakefront dining experience, West Shore Café’s seasonal menu features fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, a stellar wine list, craft cocktails and stunning views of Lake Tahoe. During the summer, the restaurant will be open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for dinner from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., offering both indoor and outdoor pier seating. Walk-ins are welcome for lunch, and reservations are recommended for dinner service. Dining guests are encouraged to check the restaurant’s website prior to visiting as the restaurant is occasionally closed for private events.
