Outside Magazine names Squaw Valley ‘Spring Skiing Capital of America’

April 5, 2014 By Jeffrey Weidel

Recognizing the unique opportunities and activities that take place this time of year, Outside Magazine has named Squaw Valley ski resort in Lake Tahoe its top choice for “Spring Skiing capital of America.”Squaw hot tub, girls

Squaw was chosen as Outside Magazine’s 2014 Editor’s Choice for spring skiing. Here’s what the magazine wrote in describing Squaw Valley.

“Squaw folks like to call the resort the spring-skiing capital of America. They’re not wrong. Hot sun during the day combined with cold nights makes for perfect corn snow come morning. When it turns to slush, join the girls in bikinis sipping cocktails poolside atop the mountain. And in an amphitheater at the base of the KT-22 lift, bands like the Wailers and Jurassic 5 jam until the sun goes down.

Here’s what one can expect on an average spring skiing day at Squaw: sunshine, corn cycles, longer days, the sun deck, High Camp hot tub, live music, fun events, and more.

Spring conditions: With over 5-plus feet of new snow and sunny skies in the forecast this weekend, the skiing and riding at Squaw and neighboring Alpine Meadows is very good right now.Squaw, skier in Hawaiian shirt

From groomers to parks to bumps and steeps, there’s something for everyone on the mountain right now. Temperatures have been dropping overnight, keeping the snow in great shape and providing fast groomers in the morning with fun corn in the afternoon.

Where to ski or ride: In the spring, follow the sun to get the most out of your day. South facing slopes warm first in the morning sun, so start out skiing on lifts like Gold Coast or Big Blue.

As the day warms up, check out Shirley, Siberia and Headwall lifts. Trails off these lifts take a little longer to loosen up. Also give the Sun Bowl, located right off the top of Headwall lift, a few runs. It features great pitch and soft snow.

High Camp hot tub: What’s better than riding all morning then soaking in a hot tub at 8,200 feet in the afternoon! That’s definitely available at Squaw, where the atmosphere is pretty darn festive in the afternoon.Heavenly girls in bathing suits

It’s recommended wearing a bathing suit from now until the end of the season. You never know when you’ll want to take a dip at Squaw.

Lively spring events: Live music, Cushing’s Crossing, passholder parties and much more. Squaw features a stacked schedule coming up with fun events. Check out the event calendarto see what’s coming up next!

Dress up weekends: Skiers and riders of all ages have been known to break out their funkiest attire to match the theme of the weekend. When you dress up you’ll save $10 on your lift ticket or an employee could hand you a $5 food and beverage gift card good at Squaw and Alpine owned locations.

Dress up weekend schedule:

  • April 5-6: Superhero weekend
  • April 12-13: All American weekend
  • April 19-20: Fan’s choice! Vote for your favorite theme.

Passholder deal: Are you a passholder at another resort? When you flash your other resort season pass, you get a discounted $50 lift ticket. The deal is good through the end of the season.CushingCrossing good shot
