Squaw Valley hosts 10K race Aug. 23

July 31, 2014 By Jeffrey Weidel

In conjunction with this year’s Peaks & Paws event, the Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Foundation (SAF) is hosting the Squaw 2 Alpine 10K Challenge on Saturday, Aug. 23. Proceeds from the event benefiting both SAF and the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.

The fifth annual Peaks & Paws Festival will feature fun dog-themed entertainment, fun activities for the whole family, adoptable dogs, wine and beer tasting, and some entertaining bluegrass music. Peaks & Paws takes place Saturday, Aug. 23 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at The Village at Squaw Valley. The event benefits the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. Last year’s event raised $4,000.Squaw Brew & Jazz Festival

The Squaw 2 Alpine 10K Challenge on begins at 9 a.m. and consists of a 6.2 mile run from Squaw Valley to Alpine Meadows. The trail run is open to runners and walkers, as well as their dogs. Participants will begin at the bottom of the KT-22 chairlift at Squaw Valley and follow the Western States trail and US Forest Service fire road over to Alpine Meadows.

The race concludes in the Alpine Meadows parking lot, where return shuttles will transport participants back to The Village at Squaw Valley. A full map of the course can be viewed at https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zB-RFuHgHctU.klXOe5ZLGsO8.

The Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Foundation is a nonprofit organization working to raise funds for local winter sports athletes and coaches to help them pursue their snow sports goals.  Through fundraising efforts, the nonprofit was able to extend 23 scholarships to local and regional athletes last year, equaling more than $25,000 in value.

“It’s events like this one that allow us to grant such scholarships, and this year we hope to help even more winter sports athletes with the cost of pursuing their dreams,” said Reem Saffouri, President of SAF. “We invite anyone who loves the outdoors to join us for this fun event that benefits SAF, as well as the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.”

Registration for the 10K Challenge is $30 now through August 8, or $40 August 9-22. Participants can register their dogs in the “People and Pets” category for an additional $5.

Registration is currently open online at http://www.active.com/olympic-valley-ca/running/races/squaw2alpine-10k-challenge-2014. Sign-ups will also be available in the Palisades Conference Room in The Village at Squaw Valley on Friday, August 22 from 3-6 p.m.

Race check-in will take place August 23 from 7-8:30 a.m. in The Village at Squaw Valley. Awards will be presented at 1:15 p.m. at the Center Stage, located in The Village.
