Fun spring skiing events at Squaw Alpine

April 14, 2017 By Jeffrey Weidel

Spring skiing will be celebrated on a number of upcoming days at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows – assuming the crazy April weather doesn’t interrupt the schedule.

A storm hit Lake Tahoe ski resorts again Thursday, but should subside by this evening. However, more snow is on the way, starting sometime Sunday.

The 27th annual Cushing Crossing takes place May 6 at Squaw Valley. The original pond skimming event challenges guests to cross the chilly waters of Cushing Pond on skis, a snowboard, or any ski- or snowboard-based vessel.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows certainly has enough snow already. The popular Lake Tahoe ski resort was reporting 692 inches of snow earlier Thursday and could crack the coveted 700-inch mark by Friday morning. Squaw Alpine plans to operate with skiing and riding into June and will reopen July 4, weather and conditions permitting. If that is the case, Squaw Alpine will have Tahoe’s longest ski season.

Below is a list of upcoming springtime events at Squaw Alpine.

2016-17 Passholder Appreciation Parties – Alpine Meadows, April 15; Squaw Valley, May 6
The resorts are encouraging skiers and riders with a 2016-17 season pass to wear their silliest chapeau for the party at Alpine Meadows. The day will feature a hat/helmet decorating station. For the complete schedule and more information on the Alpine Meadows Passholder Appreciation party, click here.

Wear your Cinco de Mayo garb for the year-end party at Squaw Valley, which is serving food and drink specials, along with free live music! To learn more about the Squaw Valley Passholder Appreciation party, click here.

Whacky Costumes & Themed Weekends all Spring
Known for a whacky onesie or colorful tutu any day of the week, the resort celebrates the carefree spring vibes with fun dress-up themes each weekend.
Spring Music Series – Saturdays and Sundays through April 30 at Alpine Meadows
Hosted at the deck of the Alpine Meadows Lodge from 1-4 p.m. over five music-filled weekends, the Spring Music Series is a great way to conclude a day of spring skiing. Performers include Joy & Madness, Sambada, The Blues Monsters, Ideateam, Midtown Social, Peter Joseph Burtt & The Kingtide, Lumination and Scarlet Moon. Click here for the full schedule of events.

Played at Alpine Meadows on April 22, the nine-hole course starts at the top of Summit Express Chair and meanders its way down the mountain with the last holes bringing competitors back to the bottom of Alpine Bowl Chair.

Easter at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows – Sunday, April 16
Kids can search in the snow for colorful eggs at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. Guests at Alpine Meadows can also do some searching with the help of technology during the Beacon and Eggs Scavenger Hunt, where you can learn the basics of avalanche awareness and proper beacon techniques while searching for Easter Eggs filled with great prizes. Mountaintop services will be held at both mountains and a special Easter Service will be held at High Camp and the Squaw Valley Chapel. For more information and a complete schedule, click here.

34th Annual Snow Golf Tournament at Alpine Meadows – Saturday, April 22
The popular tournament features a top-to-bottom snow golf course, and is a unique way to spend a day on the slopes with the whole family. The nine-hole course starts at the top of Summit Express Chair and meanders its way down the mountain with the last holes bringing competitors back to the bottom of Alpine Bowl Chair. This event is weather and conditions permitting.

27th Annual Cushing Crossing at Squaw Valley – Saturday, May 6
The original pond skimming event that started a spring resort ritual, participants are challenged to cross the chilly waters of Cushing Pond on skis, a snowboard, or any ski- or snowboard-based vessel – resulting in colossal crashes, ultra-creative contraptions and hilarious costumes, with the spectacle being judged by a celebrity panel. This year’s Cushing Crossing starts at 1 p.m. at Cushing Pond, located adjacent to the KT Base Bar. The legendary competition will be limited to the first 50 registrants, and participants can register on the morning of the event at KT Base Bar. Event kicks off at 1pm, awards at 3pm at the KT Base Bar. For the complete schedule and more information, click here.
