Below average season snow totals at Tahoe ski resorts

March 22, 2025 By Jeffrey Weidel

Thanks to several sizable storms in March, Tahoe ski resorts still have an ample amount of snow in a season where the overall amount is less than average.

It appears Sugar Bowl will have the most recorded snow in the Tahoe region for a second straight season.

It probably won’t quality as a “Miracle March,” but the additional snow means enough coverage for resorts to operate into late April.

According to Andrew Schwartz, director of the Central Sierra Snow Lab on Donner Pass, the Tahoe snowpack typically peaks April 1. Though the Sierra snowpack increased significantly this March, because no other large storms are on the horizon, it’s unlikely Tahoe will see another Miracle March in 2025.

“This year is a little below average in terms of precipitation,” Schwartz said. “People love Miracle March, this idea that March is somehow going to make up for this big lack of snowpack throughout the season by having these big storms come in, one right after the other. This has realistically been a pretty average March.”

300-INCH CLUB: Although Sugar Bowl may break the 400-inch snow barrier this season, it’s unlikely the resort off Interstate 80 at Donner Summit will have any company.

As of March 21, there were five Tahoe ski resorts with 300 or more inches of snow at their summit for the 2024-25 season. Sugar Bowl leads the pack with 367 inches, including 33 inches in the past week.

A year ago, Sugar Bowl received 481 inches at its summit, the most among Tahoe ski resorts. That was 106 percent more than the resort’s average season’s snow total.

It’s likely only five Tahoe ski resorts will break the 300-inch mark for snow this season.

Boreal Mountain (413 inches) was the only other Tahoe resort with more than 400 inches a year ago. Both Palisades Tahoe (394), Mt. Rose (391) and Soda Springs (389) were close to reaching the 400-inch mark.

Not a single Tahoe ski resort is likely to have more snow this season than last. Among the other resorts to break the 300-inch barrier this year are Palisades Tahoe (328), Mt. Rose (305), Soda Springs (306), and Boreal (302).
