Palisades makes list of Top-10 resorts with black runs

July 29, 2026 By Jeffrey Weidel

When it comes to serious, advanced terrain among U.S. ski resorts, there’s no doubt where the toughest runs reside. The answer is out west.

Palisades Tahoe ski resort features 147 black runs and attracts a large number of expert skiers and riders.

In a recent story by Snowbrains, reportedly the world’s largest independent snow sports media outlet that’s based in Olympic Valley, writer Gregg Frantz takes a look at what are the Top-10 U.S. resorts with the most black diamond runs.  The list includes four ski resorts from both Colorado and Utah, and one each from California and Montana.

According to Frantz, to make his list, ski resorts have to maintain trails that are rated advanced, expert, or expert-only.

CHECK OUT THE TOP-10 LIST BELOW

There are a large number of ski resorts in this country that offer difficult, tough, high-angle, and technical terrain. But how many is the focus of this story. The lone California resort probably comes as no surprise – Palisades Tahoe.

Since Palisades Tahoe is the lone California resort, we will start there.

Palisades Tahoe, (tied 4th): 147 Black Runs

With over 170 trails on the Palisades side and over 100 trails on the Alpine side, Palisades Tahoe claims over 270 total runs across a sprawling 6,000 skiable acres, delivering immense variety.

Palisades Tahoe is known for its legendary terrain, deep powder, steep chutes, and big bowls, which give advanced skiers plenty of challenge.

Palisades Tahoe has 58 black and 32 double black runs on the Palisades side of the mountain. There are 41 black and 16 double blacks on the Alpine Meadows side, giving it a combined total of 147 black runs.

Palisades Tahoe is known for its legendary terrain, deep powder, steep chutes, and big bowls, which give advanced skiers plenty of challenge. It’s tough to beat KT-22 and Silverado lifts on a powder day.

Palisades Tahoe breeds more pro skiers than anywhere else on Earth because of its steep inbounds terrain and the insane amount of cliffs and pillows and jumps there. The whole place is a freeride paradise, and there’s a reason why there are so many crazy good pros that come from Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley).

  • Headwall: The Slot, Headwall Face, Light Towers, and Cornice 2 Bowl.
  • Siberia: The Chimney is insane… Double black, Main Chute, and National Chute.
  • Emigrant: Main Line Pocket is mostly airs.
  • Granite Chief: Granite Chief Peak – hike up and ski down, and Corkscrew.
  • Silverado: Frogs and Toads, China Wall, Kathmandu, The Drifter, Gotts, Bungee Bowl, and Kimas Paw.
  • Best chairs at Palisades Tahoe: KT-22, Headwall, Silverado, Granite Chief
