The 2025-26 ski season is officially over in California.
The curtain came down on the season Sunday (June 7) with the last day of skiing and riding at Mammoth Mountain, the final major resort open in the U.S. However, there are two ski resorts still open (see below).
Palisades Tahoe outlasted all other Tahoe ski resorts, shutting down its lifts Sunday, May 24. At the time, only four other U.S. ski resorts remained open.
Due to a lack of snow, Palisades Tahoe was originally expected to close in late April. But it received 81 inches of snow in April (nearly 7 feet), including 11 inches in a single night.
The excessive April snowfall brought Palisades Tahoe’s season total to 359 inches and extended the season by nearly a month. Multiple Tahoe resorts failed to reach 200 inches of snowfall for the 2025-26 season and closed in March.
Like most California ski resorts, Mammoth was contemplating an early end to the season. Due to some unexpected snow throughout April, the resort kept pushing back the closing date. Last season Mammoth closed on June 15.
For the season send-off, Mammoth ran three lifts – Broadway Express, Face Lift Express and Chair 23.
Mammoth is located on California’s Eastern Sierra range, approximately 100 miles south of the Nevada state line and 50 minutes from the eastern gate of Yosemite.
Although its snow total didn’t reach its typical 400-inch average, Mammoth finished the year with 297 inches of snow at its Main Lodge. The season lasted 199 days.
Summer operations are already underway – both the Mammoth Bike Park and Sierra Star Golf course are open daily.
Two U.S. Resorts Still Open
Timberline Lodge: The Oregon ski resort on Mt. Hood announced it would close for the season July 19. The closing date last year was Aug. 17.
Timberline has two upper mountain lifts open – the Magic Mile and Palmer. Typically, the resort is open this time of year seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Timberline has received 341 inches of snow this season.
Beartooth Basin: This is one funky Wyoming ski resort that annually starts its season in May or June and only offers summer ski hours. The tentative closing day this season is June 21.
This season has been more unusual than most at Beartooth Basin. It opened May 25, but due to lift maintenance issues, Beartooth closed less than a week later. The resort is hoping to reopen June 12, which means the remainder of the ski season is only nine days away.
Located in Wyoming at 10,900 feet on the Montana-Wyoming border, the resort has no access in the winter due to the closure of Beartooth pass. It’s not a resort for beginners. Beartooth advises that its ski area is for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders only.
Lift tickets are cheap at $50 and a season pass costs $395. Beartooth is typically open from 9 am to 3 pm.
