Snow Report: Lake Tahoe ski resorts continue powder skiing today

December 8, 2013 By Jeffrey Weidel

Snow continued to drop Saturday on Lake Tahoe ski resorts. And the temperatures keep dropping as well.

Many Lake Tahoe ski resorts are reporting daytime temperatures in the single digits and on Saturday night they went into sub-zero in most places.

But there probably aren’t too many skiers or snowboarders complaining about the unseasonably low temperatures. That’s because they were skiing or riding in powder this weekend at their favorite Lake Tahoe ski resort.

Although the snow has subsided today (Dec. 8), it was dropping on Saturday. Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort reported 14 inches of new snow Saturday. Squaw Valley ski resort got 7 inches, Northstar California got 5-8 inches, and Kirkwood ski resort had 4-6 inches and 3 feet of snow overall from the storm, which began Friday evening.

Northstar opens Backside

Northstar ski resort now has eight lifts open, accessing 25 trails, and opened the Backside area as well.

“Our snowmakers have been working around the clock for the past couple of weeks to build a phenomenal base and that really gave us a head start, allowing us to fully enjoy this incredible snow,” said Bill Rock, vice president and chief operating officer of Northstar. “The snow is cold, dry, light and it just keeps coming. The additional natural snow and our snowmaking efforts allowed us to open some of our guests’ favorite terrain including the Backside.”

Squaw opening more terrain

At Squaw Valley ski resort, the conditions naturally keep getting better as well. Squaw Valley ski resort has 11 lifts and 13 trails available today. Off the hill, families can enjoy snow tubing, mini snowmobiles, mountaintop ice skating, and scenic tram rides to the top of the mountain.

“The nearly two feet of snow that we’ve received has allowed us to open substantially more terrain, including the much-anticipated opening of the Squaw Creek chairlift (Saturday),” said Cara Whitley, chief marketing officer for Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.

Big weekend at Boreal

Boreal ski resort is also having a snowy weekend. The ski resort off Interstate 80 reported 3 inches of snow on Saturday and 33 overall from the storm.
