Snow storm ignites opening day for Sierra-at-Tahoe

December 13, 2014 By Jeffrey Weidel

Thanks to a large snow storm, the wait has ended for Sierra-at-Tahoe, which opened Friday for skiing and snowboarding.

Located off Highway 50 heading into South Lake Tahoe, Sierra operates differently from other ski resorts in the region. One of the most notable differences between Sierra and its neighbors is the resort has very little snowmaking equipment. Sierra is almost totally dependent on what Mother Nature sends each winter.

This week’s storm left more than 15 inches of fresh snow in the Lake Tahoe region, allowing Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort to open Friday (Dec. 12) at noon for the 2014-15 winter season. Early season conditions still exist, and the resort will operate limited terrain accessed by the Grandview Express and Easy Rider Express.

“We are excited to welcome skiers and riders back to Sierra-at-Tahoe, now that the winter season is officially underway,” said John Rice, general manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort. “Mother Nature has opened the storm door, and with more snow in the forecast early next week, we’re prepared to open additional terrain as conditions permit.”

Sierra-at-Tahoe is one of the few Lake Tahoe ski resorts without extensive snow-making capability.

Sierra accumulated 15 inches over a 24-hour period, which brings the total season snowfall to 40 inches. The National Weather Service forecast calls for another cold storm to move through the region early next week. As conditions permit, Sierra Resort will continue to open additional terrain. Sierra-at-Tahoe lift and trail status updates can be viewed here.

“Those who haven’t visited Sierra in some time are going to be pleased with the transformation. We’ve made significant investments in the last year to enhance the base area with the recent completion of the Solstice Plaza, and have implemented new learning programs and terrain that will make it easier than ever for those just starting out to build their skills,” Rice continued.

Ski and snowboard lessons are available daily for all ages. If booked online in advance, adults ages 13-above can learn to ski or ride for as little as $45, Sunday through Friday, non-holiday. Food and beverage outlets at the base area are now open daily as well.
