Northstar sets new February snowfall record

February 17, 2019 By Jeffrey Weidel

Northstar California broke its February snowfall record Sunday.

Northstar California woke up Sunday morning (Feb. 17) with 19 inches of new snow. That pushed its total to 199 inches this month, breaking the previous record of 188 inches in 2017.

Northstar California has received 113 inches of snow in the past week, the most among Tahoe ski resorts.

And the record-breaking total will keep increasing. It’s snowing again Sunday at Northstar and there are still 11 days remaining in February.

Located in Truckee off Highway 267, Northstar has received 113 inches of snow in the past week, the most among Tahoe ski resorts. The resort is reporting 331 inches since Jan. 1, making it quite the month for skiing and snowboarding Lake Tahoe.

Check out the latest snow totals below in the TAHOE SNOW REPORT.

One day earlier, Squaw Valley was reporting it had established a new snowfall record for February. It added 30 more inches Sunday morning and now has 235 inches in February. Squaw is nearing the 500-inch season-total mark and currently has 492 inches (41 feet) of snow, the most of any Tahoe ski resort. Squaw has already surpassed its average season total (450 inches).

Nearby Alpine Meadows is also enjoying huge snow totals this season. It has received 87 inches over the past week and has 407 inches to date.

Homewood Mountain on Tahoe’s West Shore is reporting 105 inches over the last week, hiking its season snow total to 458 inches. Boreal Mountain has 432 inches and Kirkwood Mountain is not far behind with a season-total of 425 inches.

WEATHER REPORT: According to Bryan Allegretto, OpenSnow California Snow Forecaster, Sunday will bring a final round of snow showers. The winds will be lighter, but still gusting at 40 mph at some of the ridgetops. An additional 3-10 inches of powdery snow could accumulate Sunday night.

Allegretto predicts that Monday and Tuesday should be sunny at times with light winds. He predicts the next snowfall will be Wednesday into Thursday, dropping 3-6 inches of powdery snow.
