Northstar, Homewood add new terrain for skiing, snowboarding

December 22, 2013 By Jeffrey Weidel

Alpine skier jumping over rocksSome additional snow made all the difference for two of Lake Tahoe’s ski resorts this week – Homewood Mountain and Northstar California.

Both North Lake Tahoe ski resorts added terrain for skiing and snowboarding following a snow that added as much as 6 inches to the base totals of some Tahoe resorts.

Northstar will have 19 of 20 lifts running for holidays

Northstar ski resort continues to lead the charge offering North Lake Tahoe’s most open ski terrain moving toward the holidays.  Additional terrain and trail favorites such as Castle Peak, Logger’s Loop, Ax Handle, East Ridge and many others are planned for the holidays.

Northstar ski resort crews will then focus their efforts to open Iron Horse and several others. Mountain managers stated that 19 of the resort’s 20 lifts are scheduled to run throughout the holiday period.

The cold winter weather is ideal for snowmaking conditions. And with cold temperatures in the forecast through early next week, Northstar ski resort’s snowmaking system will operate at full capacity.

“The new snow and cold temperatures have given our snowmaking team a great opportunity to offer additional terrain with superb conditions for the holidays,” said Bill Rock, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Northstar. “This time of year is incredibly popular for our guests and Northstar is thrilled to offer the most open terrain at North Lake Tahoe with additional areas opening soon.”

Lift ticket tips

For the lowest price on tickets guaranteed at Northstar ski resort, purchase online three days in advance or sooner. Purchasing three days in advance offers guests as much as 25 percent off the window ticket rate.

Homewood opens two triple-chair lifts

The cold winter storm that dropped six inches of fresh snow on Homewood ski resort on Thursday has allowed the resort to open up additional terrain for the holiday season.

Homewood ski resort opened its Quail triple chair Friday – accessing beginner, intermediate and advanced runs above the resort’s South Lodge – as well as its dedicated Children’s Ski and Snowboard School learning center.

Those additions augment the terrain available above Homewood’s North Lodge, which includes the five-feature Happy Park terrain park.

Cold temperatures on the West Shore have allowed Homewood ski resort’s snowmaking crews to continue making snow on the upper mountain, which allowed the resort to open the Madden triple chair today (Dec. 21), accessing additional terrain on the upper mountain.
