Lake Tahoe ski resorts expecting 1-3 feet of new snow

December 11, 2015 By Jeffrey Weidel

Another series of winter storms are taking place today in Lake Tahoe. Tahoe ski resorts may receive up to 1-3 feet at mountain tops and there could be 5-9 inches at lake level.

Prior to the storm, early season snowfall totals at South Lake Tahoe resorts already ranged from 59-79 inches, providing top to bottom condition for many resorts throughout the region.

NOAA forecasters call for the latest system to continue this evening with significant snowfall through Friday morning. A chance of snow is possible Friday afternoon through Monday (Dec. 14) with traces of accumulation.

“These weekly storm systems have been lining up perfectly and we’re ready for more,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “We love seeing the slopes and pine trees blanketed in snow for the holidays.”

Below are the conditions for three Lake Tahoe resorts prior to today’s storm.

Heavenly: California side is now open and 29% of the terrain is available for skiing and snowboarding, which equates to 1,400 acres, 17 lifts and 50 runs. The base depth is 24 inches.

Sierra-at-Tahoe: The South Tahoe resort has 18 of its 20 open trails on its four lifts. Broadway Terrain Park and Burton Progression Park are open. The base depth is 6 inches.

Kirkwood: There is 24% of terrain open, with 550 of their 2,300 acres accessed by five lifts and 30 runs. The base depth is 26 inches.
