Check out what U.S. ski resorts still open

May 19, 2026 By Jeffrey Weidel

A dismal 2025-26 ski season regarding snow totals is coming to a close throughout the U.S.

Palisades Tahoe’s season snow total is 359 inches, the most among Tahoe ski resorts.

Palisades Tahoe is the only Tahoe ski resort still open. It will be shutting down its lifts Sunday, May 24. Four other U.S. ski resorts are heading toward the finish line as well.

One of those four remaining open is Mammoth Mountain, a California resort that will be operating lifts at least through May 31, nearly a week longer than it had initially announced.

Located on California’s Eastern Sierra range, approximately 100 miles south of the Nevada state line and 50 minutes from the eastern gate of Yosemite, Mammoth has not confirmed its official closing day with extensions possible, depending on conditions.

After an all-but-dormant winter out West, feet of snow arrived in the Sierra. However, by the time the April snow arrived, practically all Tahoe ski resorts were closed.

Final Weekend at Palisades Tahoe: The resort received 81 inches of snow in April (nearly 7 feet), including 11 inches in a single night. The excessive April snowfall brought Palisades Tahoe’s season total to 359 inches, the most among Tahoe ski resorts. Multiple Tahoe resorts failed to reach 200 inches of snowfall for the 2025-26 season.

During its closing weekend, Palisades Tahoe plans to host the Made in Tahoe Spring Festival, a free event with live music, drinks, local art, and vendors.

The festival will feature more than 100 local artisans, nonprofits, food vendors, and performers celebrating the the Tahoe region. The free, family-friendly event will include live music, aerial performances, dance showcases, and a celebratory DJ set at Gold Coast during closing weekend.

Guests are encouraged to check the Palisades Tahoe website for the latest operations updates and event details.

Tough Year for U.S. Resorts: In Colorado, the season was the worst ever recorded, with resorts opening less than half their usual terrain for much of the winter. The season has produced wild swings. Much like Lake Tahoe, many Colorado ski areas closed in March.

Arapahoe Basin, historically Colorado’s most reliably late-closure resort, closed Sunday (May 17), its earliest shut down in over a decade.

In Utah, the snowpack peaked at 75% of average in late February before collapsing to just 15% of median by late March.

Mammoth Mountain has not confirmed its official closing day with extensions possible, depending on conditions.

While resorts across the western U.S. have shut down weeks ahead of schedule amid a historic low-snowpack season, eastern ski resorts posted one of their strongest late-season performances in years and the Canadian Rockies delivered a winter so deep it extended well into summer.

U.S. Ski Resorts Still Open

California

  • Mammoth Mountain currently has 70 trails and seven lifts open, operating from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily and the Unbound Express serving park laps from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chairs 5 and 10 reopen on weekends. After receiving just one inch of snow in March, April delivered four feet.
  • Palisades Tahoe received 84 inches of snow in April, allowing the resort to extend its season. The resort is running four lifts from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily with all access from the base via the Funitel, serving 12 open trails, through May 24. Lift operations are gradually consolidating as the season winds down.

Oregon

  • Timberline Lodge remains open with two lifts and will continue operating as long as conditions allow, typically well into summer. The resort’s scheduled target date is July 19. Timberline is one of the few ski areas in North America with a near-permanent upper snowfield, and it hosts U.S. ski team training camps through the spring and summer months.
  • Victor Glacier at Boyne Mountain is still going with plans to ski next weekend as well. |

Vermont

  • Killington plans to continue Friday-through-Sunday skiing on its Superstar Glacier with the Superstar Six lift spinning until 5 p.m. each day, conditions permitting. The resort is targeting the trifecta of downhill mountain biking, golf, and skiing over Memorial Day Weekend. No firm closing date has been set. Historically, Killington runs deep into May and sometimes into June.

Michigan

  • Boyne Mountain is targeting a Memorial Day closing weekend and is operating on weekends only.
