Two people died last week in accidents at Lake Tahoe ski resorts.
The two ski deaths are reportedly the first of the 2013-14 ski season in Lake Tahoe.
The ski deaths were a Sugar Bowl ski resort employee from Brazil and a 43-year-old Bay Area man from Belmont who was skiing at skiing Northstar California ski resort.
Both ski deaths were a result of crashing into trees.
Sugar Bowl
On Thursday, the body of 18-year-old Santos Constantine Martins
Bezerra of Sao Bernardo, Brazil, was found by a snowshoer at the
Sugar Bowl resort.
The body of Bezerra was found in the late morning in an area
off the resort’s trail system, said John Monson, Sugar Bowl spokesman.
Bezerra was working at the resort on a cultural-exchange visa. The
date on his lift pass indicated he had struck a tree Wednesday, said
Dena Erwin, spokeswoman for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s coroner determined that Bezerra, who was not wearing a
helmet, died from head injuries suffered when he struck the tree, she
said.
“We at the resort are sending our heartfelt prayers and condolences to his family,” Monson said.
Northstar California
On Friday, Belmont resident Lindsay Allen Van Why died after hitting a
tree while skiing at Northstar, Erwin said.
Van Why, 43, was visiting the resort with his family and skiing near the Cascades run when the accident occurred, according to Erwin.
It is not known whether Van Why had been wearing a helmet.
