Squaw Valley hosts Peaks & Paws fundraiser Aug. 23

July 23, 2014 By Jeffrey Weidel

There’s definitely a dog day afternoon on the horizon at Squaw Valley.

The Village at Squaw Valley is paying tribute to man – and women’s – best friend this August 23 with the fifth annual Peaks and Paws Festival.Peaks & Paws - Dog shot

This is a fun-filled day that people can share with their canine companions! The fifth annual Peaks & Paws Festical will feature fun dog-themed entertainment, fun activities for the whole family, adoptable dogs, wine and beer tasting, and some entertaining bluegrass music.

Peaks & Paws takes place Saturday, Aug. 23 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Village at Squaw Valley. The event benefits the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. Last year’s event raised $4,000.

One of the vendors at the event again this year will be Truckee-Tahoe Pet Lodge, located near Squaw Valley at 10960 West River St. in Truckee. The business is a reliable place to board dogs or cats overnight and includes some “luxury” accommodations, according to owner Laura Vanderpool.

“Truckee is such a wonderful pet-loving area,” Vanderpool said. “It’s great to see so many people at this event, including many clients from Truckee-Tahoe Pet Lodge out with their furry friends supporting the Humane Society. Squaw Valley is such a gorgeous setting for Peaks & Paws – it’s   surrounded by beautiful mountains and the event has great music. Peaks & Paws is a great way to connect with new and old 2-and-4-legged friends.”

This year Peaks & Paws will combine fun dog-centric entertainment, including J.D. Platt’s K9 Kings Entertainment Team featuring high-flying Frisbee & acrobatic routines, Flyball & Agility demonstrations, dog-friendly activities like hikes and fun-filled fetching contests, and a variety of wine, craft beers and good music.

Beer will be provided by Lagunitas Brewing Company. This year’s music lineup features local bluegrass favorite, Bison Bluegrass, and the one-and-only Poor Man’s Whiskey.Poor Mans Whisky

“We are more excited for this year’s Peaks & Paws than ever before!” said Stephanie Jensen-Nistler, Executive Director, Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. “We have an amazing Frisbee and acrobatic dog team, The K-9 Kings, performing throughout the day. There will be Flyball and Agility demonstrations, plus the fun-filled Fetch Fest and guided hikes for you and your dog. And we have Poor Man’s Whiskey headlining the event. This one-day event raises funds that go directly toward helping us save the lives of homeless pets that really need us.”

Peaks & Paws is a destination event that draws thousands of people from throughout the greater Northern California/Nevada area, creating a great atmosphere of animal-loving folks getting together to have a great time.
