Although skiing has a reputation as an elite sport due to its rising cost over the years, there are deals out there.

One of them takes place this weekend at Mt. Rose ski resort. In an effort to inspire the next generation of snowsports enthusiasts, on Sunday (Jan. 11) the Nevada resort will offer a free Learn to Snowboard Day for children ages 4 to 7.
“Learn to Snowboard Day is an opportunity for us to welcome kids into the sport of snowboarding and hopefully spark their interest in making it a lifelong passion,” said Mike Pierce, Mt. Rose marketing director. “While this won’t be a full snowboard lesson, our goal is to introduce kids to the basics and show them how much fun recreating in the snow can be.”
Mt. Rose is located off the Mt. Rose Highway in Nevada, approximately 10 miles from Incline Village in North Lake Tahoe and 25 miles from Reno.
From 9:30 a.m. to noon near the resort’s Main Lodge, children can try out the mountain’s custom Learn to Snowboard specialty park and begin learning basic snowboarding skills.
The free 2½-hour session will feature multiple activity stations designed to introduce young riders to the sport in a fun, low-pressure environment. No equipment is required.
Parents are encouraged to dress children in snow pants and jackets, waterproof footwear and to bring a helmet.
Additional deals at Mt. Rose take place weekdays during the entire season and include:
- Bonus Mondays: Extend your weekend with a discounted Monday bonus lift ticket
- Twofer Tuesdays: Twice the fun, half the price. Grab a friend and hit the mountain for 2-1 lift ticket deal

A local resident, actor Jeremy Renner was back on skis this week at Mt. Rose. - Ladies’ Day Thursdays: Discounted lift tickets for ladies, plus a Ladies Day Clinic at 9 am
- SKI G.I.F.: Thank goodness it’s Friday. Start the weekend early with discounted afternoon lift tickets
RENNER RETURNS: Reno resident Jeremy Renner was spotted back on the slopes at Mt. Rose, three years after he was run over in a snowplow accident at his Mt. Rose home.
An actor known for his roles in big hits like “The Avengers” and “Mayor of Kingstown,” posted a selfie on Instagram while skiing this week at Mt. Rose.
Returning to skiing is a major achievement for Renner. During the accident, he suffered more than 38 broken bones, 6 broken ribs, a punctured lung and a split-open skull as he was trying to prevent his Pistonbully snowplow from sliding when he forgot to engage the emergency brake before exiting.
“First time back really skiing on this mountain – Mt. Rose – and I ran into the CareFlight pilot that took me to the hospital three years ago,” said Renner, calling the happenstance “interesting and kind of cool, meeting all these heroes of mine.”

WEATHER REPORT: If you’re a fan of bluebird ski days in Tahoe, head up to the slopes – NOW.
According to OpenSnow forecaster Bryan Allegretto, the Tahoe weather should be sunny and cold Friday and Saturday with highs in the 30s. He says expect sunny and milder temperatures Sunday through portions of next week.
Although not a major storm like some previous ones since the Christmas holidays, snow did hit the Tahoe region two days ago. On Thursday morning, Northstar California was reporting 9 inches of new snow, Palisades Tahoe had 6 and Heavenly added 5 inches to its season total.
That fresh snowfall brings the season total to 152 inches at Palisades Tahoe. And according to the Sierra Central Snow Lab, the Tahoe region is now sitting at 104 percent of median snowfall to date.
