Summer fun at Heavenly’s new Epic Discovery

July 9, 2016 By Jeffrey Weidel

Heavenly Mountain Resort is not just about snow sports any longer. Heavenly recently unveiled its new Epic Discovery summer activities program, which includes zip lines, mountain coasters and canopy tours.

The gravity-based alpine coaster allows guests on individual sleds to descend on a raised track through the forest and natural rock formations, with incredible scenic views of Lake Tahoe.

Heavenly Mountain Resort’s on-mountain summer experience, immerses families in activities that provide big-time thrills, guide them to explore and better understand their natural surroundings, and ultimately create lifelong memories in the national forest.

“Epic Discovery is a game-changer for summer at Heavenly and South Lake Tahoe,” said Pete Sonntag, vice president and chief operating officer of Heavenly Mountain Resort. “It’s an example of great public-private partnership, working with the U.S. Forest Service and The Nature Conservancy to provide the ultimate outdoor experience for families.”

Heavenly is one of the most unique mountain resorts nationwide. It combines 4,800 acres of off-the-grid terrain and incredible views of Lake Tahoe.

Below are some of the Epic Discovery activities available throughout the summer (weather and conditions permitting):

  • Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster: The gravity-based alpine coaster allows guests on individual sleds to descend on a raised track through the forest and natural rock formations, with incredible scenic views of Lake Tahoe. Located near the existing summer tubing hill, the alpine coaster will utilize gravity for the descent while giving riders full control of their speed.
  • Skyway Canopy Tour: Set amongst the pines surrounding the mid-station observation deck of Heavenly’s Gondola, this guided tour will immerse guests in the forest habitat with an array of zip lines and aerial bridges featuring an unfiltered view of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding mountains.
  • Zip Lines: Heavenly has two zip line experiences that provide an adrenaline rush while taking in extraordinary views of Lake Tahoe. The Hot Shot Zip Line features four, 1,000-foot lines and the Blue Streak is a 3,300-foot dual-line zip line where riders reach speeds of up to 50 mph.
  • Challenge Courses: Three ropes courses – Boulder Cove, Black Bear and Discovery Forest – provide families with all levels of challenge and adventure.

“Epic Discovery is a defining experience for the Tahoe area, and it’s creating the perfect climate for four-season, world-class adventure,” said Caroline Beteta, President and CEO of Visit California. “It’s experiences like Epic Discovery that continue to make California the No. 1 destination in the United States.”
