More than a foot of snow expected today in Lake Tahoe region

January 30, 2014 By Jeffrey Weidel

A blanket of white has returned to the Lake Tahoe region.

The snow began dropping on Wednesday night and is expected to continue throughout today.Northstar powder skier 12.8.13

According to KCRA-3 TV in Sacramento, the storm could drop between 12-16 inches of snow at elevation 7,500 feet and above. The snow total is expected to be 4-8 inches at 6,000 feet.

Snow levels Thursday morning are expected to drop near 4,500 feet. There is 100 percent chance of snow today and that drops to 60 percent on Friday.

Located off Mt. Rose Highway, Mt. Rose ski resort was reporting the most snow in the Tahoe region with 7-11 inches since last night.

Both Diamond Peak and Kirkwood ski resort had 8 inches of new snow and both Sugar Bowl ski resort and Heavenly Mountain were reporting 7 inches of snow overnight.Heavenly skier 1-22-12

Northstar California reported 4-7 inches of snow, while both Sierra-at-Tahoe and Squaw Valley had 6 inches

This is only the second snow day in January. Ski resorts reported up to 5 inches of snowfall Jan. 11. That was the first snow in Lake Tahoe since Dec. 7.

Outside of a sizable snow storm in early December, precipitation this winter has been almost non-existent in the Lake Tahoe region. This trend that comes after 2013 was one of the driest ever in the Sierra.
